[i]2010 GENEE DANCE CHALLENGE SUCCESS!!


We are delighted and very proud to announce that Harris Beattie (age 11) was one of the two winners at his level (Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate) at this new National Ballet competition held at Birmingham Royal Ballet on Saturday 31 July.

Competing against 27 other candidates from across the country, Harris obviously impressed the judge with his performance and the orginal choreography from Karen Berry.

He has won an invitation to perform his dance at Supper With The Stars (an exclusive fundraising event) and 2 tickets and expenses paid trip to London for the Genee International Ballet Competition in November.

Well done Harris!

NEW BABY!!

Congratulations to Michelle Whyte who (eventually!) gave birth to Oliver Ian Murray on 17 July. Michelle, husband John and big brother Noah are all delighted with the new addition to the Murray household and hopefully we will see him in person at Danscentre very soon - but meantime here are a couple of pictures to keep us going...

COMMERCIAL JAZZ WORKSHOP

Kirsty Black - a former Danscentre student and graduate of London Studio Centre held a commercial jazz workshop for our senior pupils at Danscentre this week. Kirsty has been dancing professionally for the last 5 years and we are always delighted to see her when she returns to Aberdeen.

Everyone had a great time relaxing at the aftershow party last Saturday night. It was a fantastic week as you will know if you attended any of the performances.

JANET CRAM AWARDS - RESULTS!!

Great news!! Congratulations to Harris Beattie who took the award for Best Boy at this prestigious competition. Entrants from all over the UK compete every year in this event with the finals being held in London. Molly Forsyth also did very well reaching the finals.

LEWIS AND SEAN MEET LOUIE

Senior boys, Lewis Seivwright and Sean Milner, who were in London supporting our Janet Cram entrants Molly and Harris, stayed on to take a class at Pineapple Dance Studios and met Louie Spence from the Sky programme of the same name!
















WEDDINGS! WEDDINGS! WEDDINGS!

Teachers Kim Barry and Robyn Moir are now Mrs Turner and Mrs Park respectively. Both made beautiful brides and a lovely time was had by all at their weddings - see photos below...

Also, during the holidays, Fiona Skene will become Mrs Farquharson!

All three will still be using their maidens names for teaching.




















CHARLOTTE SUMMERS BA (Hons) Dance Education, Royal Academy of Dance RTS, LRAD, ISTD - CDE




We are delighted to introduce Miss Summers to you all - some of you will have already met her in class.

Charlotte trained at the Royal Academy of Dance in London gaining the RAD Licentiate qualifiction and graduating with honours. She is also a fully qualified teacher of the ISTD gaining her Certificate in Dance education within the Modern Theatre branch. Charlotte has taught for dance schools across Scotland including Yvonne Gray School of Dance Cupar, Morningside Dance Academy Edinburgh and most recently Academy Street Studios in Aberdeen.

We are delighted she has joined us for the remainder of the term to cover Miss Whyte s maternity leave and that she will be staying on after summer on a more permanent basis.
















JANET CRAM COMPETITION

Molly Forsyth and Harris Beattie both have qualified for the finals of this very prestigious competition! These pictures were taken at the heats in Manchester. Aisling O Sullivan and Amy Park went along to support their class mates. Well done to both of them and the very best of luck at the finals in London on 13 June.




















KENNY BURKE CLASSES

Kenny Burke, ex-director of Scottish Ballet and world renowned choreographer took some classes at Danscentre on Saturday 15 May.

















MICHELLE WHYTE - BIRTHDAY

Michelle was presented in class with a lovely bouquet of flowers for her birthday. She is hiding somewhere at the back!

SCOTTISH BALLET WORKSHOP

Scottish Ballet workshop- Romeo and Juliet. The Wednesday Grade 6 class were treated to a work shop with Emma Jane from Scottish Ballet Education Unit. The class learned sequences from the choreography that was preformed last week on HMT stage. A fantastic opportunity and well deserved!














JORDAN BLACKBURN

Jordan Blackburn leaves for America. The Wednesday Jazz coaching class say goodbye to Jordan Blackburn who has been a member since 3! Good luck Jordan, to you and your family -hope to see you again soon!


















CREATIVE WORK FORM THURSDAY JAZZ

Miss Auld s class were set a task in preparation for their jazz exam which takes place in June.
In class the girls made up a rhyme together to remember the ‘bounce’ exercise…………
”baby,baby,baby, big,big,big,clap, baby,baby,baby, out,in,cha,cha,cha!”
(It makes sense to us!!!!)

A handful of girls within the class made fantastic pictures at home using colourful pens and little illustrations around their rhyme.
For the effort they put in we thought it would be a nice idea to display their work on the Danscentre web.

STRICTLY BALLROOM

DANSCENTRE STUDENTS MEET THE STARS!

Danscentre Performance Group performed alongside Strictly Stars Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag at the Grand Re-Opening of the Beach Ballroom last weekend. The students were delighted that Anto and Erin stayed to be photographed and give autographs!

Additionally the European Champions Alex and Lisa Bellinger led a workshop at Danscentre, teaching the Argentinian Tango and Cha Cha Cha leaving our students and staff desperate to learn more! Watch out for a future workshop later this year!































RAD BOYS-ONLY DAY - EDINBURGH

Cameron Macdonald, Dylan Smith, Harris Beattie and Oscar Reynolds all took part in this first boys-only event held by the RAD on 10 & 11 April at Dancebase in Edinburgh. Everyone was presented with a certificate
















Y-DANCE SUCCESS

Congratulations to Lewis Seivwright, Keith Low, Sean Milner and Amy Robertson who all successfully auditioned for Y Dance. This is a Scottish dance initiative which takes place during the summer, with participants travelling and performing all over Scotland - look out for a show near you and go along and support them!

Iona and her family have moved to Australia this month - we wish them all the best - keep up the dancing Iona!



















ROCK CHALLENGE

One of our pupils - Shannon McDonald - performed in this competition with Westhill Academy at the AECC last Friday and they won the round! This means they are off to the finals in Grimsby in May. Well done to Shannon and Westhill Academy and good luck in May!

RAD INTERMEDIATE BALLET RESULTS

Keith Low, Douglas Moir, Robert Noble, Stephanie Ross (not pictured below) and Lewis Seivwright achieved outstanding results in this recent exam with 4 Distinctions and a Merit between them! Lewis achieved the highest ever mark in this exam from our dance school. Well done everyone!

Staff and Students from Danscentre thoroughly enjoyed this performance on 15th January - at the end everyone in the audience was invited to come up on to the stage for a quick ceilidh! (Do not think they expected such a high uptake!!)

BEACH BALLROOM GRAND RE-OPENING

After the great success of our dancers at the Tartan Ball, we have been invited to take part in the re-opening of the Main Ballroom at the Beach Ballroom in April 2010. This will take place over 2 nights - 16th and 17th April - and be attended by Strictly Come Dancing professional dancers Anton du Beke & Erin Boag on Friday and Brian Fortuna & Kristina Rihanoff on the Saturday. This is very exciting news and it is a real priviledge to be asked to take part in such a prestigious event. More information to follow.

Danscentre senior pupils thoroughly enjoyed the Scottish Ballet workshop over the October holidays with live persussion music and 2 professional dancers. After 2 hours of class leading up to learning repertoire from Scottish Ballet latest tour the pupils were both exhilarated and exhausted!

RAD SCOTTISH AWARDS DAY
WOW!! MORE AWARDS FOR DANSCENTRE PUPILS!!











Pupils from Danscentre, Aisling O’Sullivan (age 8, Grade 2)and Molly Forsyth (age 10 Grade 3) triumphed at the weekend at the Royal Academy of Dance Scottish Awards in Edinburgh on 20 September.
Aisling and Molly—pictured 1st and 2nd left in front of Adjudicator Penny Withers (Ex Scottish Ballet) and RAD Scottish Chairwoman Louise Murray each won their respective categories in this competition for pupils from all over Scotland.










All the Danscentre pupils who took part in the Scottish Awards Day with their certificates. Aisling and Molly centre and front with their trophies. Accompanied by teachers Maxine Hamilton, Gillian Auld, Jill Graham and Karen Berry.

SUCCESS FOR BOYS!








Murray Williams And Matthew Read were both successful in gaining a place in the Scottish Ballet Junior Associate scheme this year. They will travel to Glasgow once a month for tuition. They will also be joined by Harris Beattie, Cameron Macdonald and Dylan Smith. 5 boys from Danscentre - WOW!

Great fun was has by all at our Summer Schools this year with birthday cake, guest tutors and participants from as far afield as Orkney!

Class assistants Iona Brown and Nikki Shaw are leaving the school this year to study at university. Nikki will be studying Engineering and Iona will be studying Languages in Edinburgh. Good luck to the girls and thank you for all your help with classes over the years.

Senior students opened the Total/Torry Academy - Une Soirée Enchantée – Enterprise in Education evening at the Marcliffe Hotel on 26th June. MOVE HIGHER 2009













Seniors students who have been studying Higher Dance for the last year entertained family and friends at Peterculter Village Hall on Sunday 14 June with dances choreographed by themselves. They have all worked tremendously hard to achieve the finished pieces and everyone present thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Also dancing were Grade 8 Ballet students and our Janet Cram soloists. Danscentre students were invited to perform at this prestigious event on 6th June giving 3 performances throughout the day.


GREAT NEWS - JANET CRAM AWARD WINNERS!


Dylan Smith and Cameron Macdonald both won prizes at the Janet Cram Awards in London on Sunday 24 May 09. Cameron won the Boys Cup and Dylan the Most Promising Male Dancer.
The boys, their families, friends and teachers travelled to London for this prestigious national competition in modern dance and we are all so proud of their achievment.











BLING FLING

Dancers provided entertainment at this charity event in Aberdeen on Sunday 17 May. The Bling Fling was organised by Sonja Rasmussen who decided to raise funds for 3 local charities after being diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2008.
