Children and Students Classes
There is a wide range of classes available for pre-school, infants, young children, teenagers and students. The emphasis is not just on fun, but, on the development of movement skills, confidence, fitness and self-esteem. Class length varies with age and standard. Separate classes are available in Jazz and Ballet for boys.
School shows are prepared once every three years with Senior School performing at H.M. Theatre and Junior School at the Arts Centre in Aberdeen. Contemporary classes perform yearly in the Lemon Tree, Aberdeen.
Examinations
Danscentre offers examinations at graded and vocational levels in association with R.A.D and I.S.T.D. two main dance societies recognised worldwide. All students have the option of taking examinations and all classes incorporate both syllabus and free work, developing a wide and sound subject base.
All examinations are accredited by the QCA, from NVQ level1 to level 4. Examinations available are Ballet (RAD) and Modern, Jazz & Tap (ISTD)
Information to Parents
Guidelines, class fees and uniform information are given out with this booklet. Newsletters given out each term provide updated information on all aspects relating to the Dance School. Parents are invited to watch classes bi-termly.
R.A.D.- The Royal Academy of Dance is an international organization, being the world’s largest and most influential examining and teaching body for classical dance. Their aim is to provide the highest possible standard of classical ballet teaching with the examinations accredited by the UK government.
I.S.T.D.- Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, another international organizations covering the full spectrum of dance styles. Its aim is to, “Educate the public in the art of dancing in all it’s forms.” There are 10 faculties within the society in Modern, Jazz, Tap as well as ballet all offered at Danscentre.
QCA - Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
NVQ - National Vocational Qualifications.
Vocational Training Scheme
The Vocational Training Scheme at Danscentre offers suitable students a more in depth-study of dance, helping to prepare for a future dance, or dance related career. Examinations at vocational level are required to apply for further dance education at diploma and degree level. Entry into the vocational schemes is by invitation from p6/7 upwards.
Adult classes
A range of dance classes at different standards are offered for adults most evenings and some mornings. Classes available are, Jazz workout, Dance based Pilates, Ballet workout and Tap. All classes are all available in blocks of 6-8 weeks at Danscentre.
Teacher Training
Danscentre is one of the few accredited centres for the I.S.T.D. In Scotland, offering two Dance Teaching Qualifications: Foundation in Dance Instruction and Certificate of Dance Education. Both accredited by the QCA at level3 and level4 respectively. Courses run yearly in January and entry is by audition. Additionally danscentre offers mentoring for students on the Classical Ballet Teaching Certificate and the BA(Hons) Dance in Education.
Aberdeen Associate Ballet Scheme
Danscentre provides specialist monthly classes for talented children enabling them to be taught by dance artists currently working in the profession. Attendance is by invitation. Teachers include Kenny Burke of A.I.Y.F. ex Director of Scottish Ballet and Leanne MacRae, ex dancer with Scottish Ballet.
Scottish Ballet Associate Scheme
Children are selected each year for audition in the Junior and Senior sections.
Community Events
The Dance School is heavily involved in local community events appearing in charity and local events, theatre productions, summer and Christmas concerts.
